Think you’re covered? Why it’s time to check your credit card travel insurance

For many Australians, credit card travel insurance has long been a convenient benefit of holding a credit card. But with some banks reviewing, reducing or removing complimentary travel insurance benefits, an important question arises: Is the cover you’ve always relied on still providing the protection you need?

As Australia’s banking and credit card landscape evolves, travellers are being encouraged to review their existing insurance arrangements before their next journey.

What’s changing with credit card travel insurance?

Alongside recent changes to Australian credit and debit card payment surcharging from October 1, 2026, several banks and card providers have been reviewing their complimentary travel insurance benefits.

According to the Australian Government’s Smartraveller service, some banks are removing complimentary travel insurance, while others are reducing coverage periods, benefits or changing eligibility requirements.

Importantly, these changes are not universal. Some credit cards may continue to offer travel insurance, although the conditions and level of protection can vary considerably between providers.

For travellers who have traditionally relied on their credit card for insurance, the most important message is simple: don’t assume your cover remains unchanged.

Five questions every traveller should ask before departure

Before relying on complimentary credit card travel insurance, take the time to confirm:

  1. Is your travel insurance still included and activated? Check whether your credit card continues to provide complimentary cover and whether you have satisfied all activation requirements.
  2. Does your policy cover your entire journey? Confirm that your destinations, travel dates, trip duration and planned activities are included.
  3. Are your medical needs appropriately covered? Understand how your policy treats pre-existing medical conditions, emergency medical treatment and medical evacuation.
  4. Are your travelling companions included? Check whether your partner, children or other dependents meet the eligibility requirements.
  5. Do you understand the limits and exclusions? Review cancellation benefits, luggage protection, excesses, coverage limits and any circumstances where claims may not be accepted.

Why professional travel advice matters more than ever

Travel insurance should never be an afterthought. It is an important part of planning a journey, just like selecting the right flights, accommodation and experiences.

This is where working with an experienced travel advisor can make a meaningful difference.

Every journey is different, and so are the circumstances of the people taking it. A multi-generational family holiday, an extended international itinerary, a luxury cruise or a business trip involving multiple destinations may each have different insurance considerations.

A professional travel advisor can help you identify these considerations, understand the insurance options available and connect you with a suitable travel insurance provider.

Rather than simply assuming your existing credit card benefits are sufficient, you have the opportunity to consider a dedicated travel insurance policy that better aligns with your travel plans and personal requirements.

And should your travel arrangements change unexpectedly, having a trusted travel advisor to assist with changes to flights, accommodation and itinerary adjustments can provide an additional level of support alongside your insurance provider’s claims and emergency assistance services.

Travel with confidence, not assumptions

Taking a few moments to review your existing arrangements, understand your policy and seek professional guidance where needed could make a significant difference to your experience if the unexpected occurs.

At Edge Connections, we believe exceptional travel experiences begin long before departure. Our experienced travel advisors take the time to understand your journey, anticipate your needs and help you consider the important details that contribute to a seamless travel experience.
